40|2013 For Now (October 21-27, 2013)

2013-10-25-Purrkins

Thursday Purrkins went back to the vet to see how he was progressing since last week.  The lab results indicate that Purrkins’ kidneys are shutting down.  The vet said to let him eat whatever he wants and to keep him comfortable.  Since then Purrkins seems fine though perhaps aging.  He sleeps a lot, walks cautiously and isn’t interested in playing.  However, he is quite interested in eating and in being close to us and getting loved on.  The lab results suggest that his kidneys have lost 75-90% functioning.  For now, everything is fine and we’ll continue to enjoy our time together.

In other news, we got two free trees this week from organizations helping to rebuild the tornado damaged areas.  We gave one of the trees to our neighbors since we already ordered a tree that will be delivered and planted soon.   The other tree we got we’ll plant soon.  It will be a long while before we have very large shade trees around here.

Guess that’s about all for now…

39|2013 A Journey (October 14 – 20, 2013)

Now that the mornings stay dark for my journey to work, I get to see the Skydance Pedestrian Bridge lights.  So, one morning this week I left a few minutes early and used my nice camera to take some photos of it.  It is really mesmerizing to watch the slow changes from one color to the next.  I can’t decide which color I like the best though.

We bought a safe that Keith bolted to the concrete floor of our home this week.  Our hope is that this is a good place to keep our external backup drives, which are loaded with family photos and videos, so that they are somewhat protected from inclement weather such as tornados or floods.

Our sweet Purrkins had a rough week.  He went to the vet on Wednesday and the doctor determined that he needed to spend time in the hospital due to pancreatitis, renal damage and dehydration.  After spending two nights in the vet hospital he came home Friday night feeling much better but he still seems weak.  Saturday was Purrkins’ 16th birthday and he got lots of hugs, kisses and happy birthday wishes.  He’ll go back to the vet later next week for a checkup.  We aren’t sure how the rest of  his journey will be.

On Saturday Keith helped his long-time friend move.  They rented a U-Haul, loaded it up and drove it to the town they’re moving to.  Keith came home tired but enjoyed writing lyrics  about his day.  He wrote them using the tune of East Bound and Down, which was sung by Jerry Reed in the movie Smokey and the Bandit.

East bound and down, loaded up and truckin’,
I’m gonna do what they say can’t be done.
I’ve got the Marshall’s to haul, all but the dog,
I’m east bound, just watch ol’ “Keithy” run.

I’ve got my foot hard on the pedal. I’ll never mind the brakes.
This ol’ road just makes this U-Haul kind of shake,
Marylin’s got her kitchen gear and Stan a ton of books,
small wonder that the twins are out of state.

East bound and down, loaded up and truckin’,
I’m gonna do what they say can’t be done.
I’ve got the Marshall’s to haul, all but the dog,
I’m east bound, just watch ol’ “Keithy” run.

Marilyn and Stan have begun a fussin’,
And they look for to me to be the referee,
I’m slugging Robitussin; they start to hear me cussin’,
Very soon my labor won’t be free.

“East bound and down, loaded up and truckin’,
I’m gonna do what they say can’t be done.
I’ve got the Marshall’s to haul, all but the dog,
I’m east bound, just watch ol’ “Keithy” run.

If you’re like me you need to watch the relevant portion of the movie and hear the song to fully appreciate Keith’s lyrics, so push play on video below:

38|2013 All Caught Up (October 7 – 13, 2013)

2013-10-12-cooking

The taco soup was delicious as was the pumpkin pie dump cake.  I don’t cook very often but I did this past weekend.  My son, daughter and her boyfriend, my dad and me all got together for a bit Saturday and we watched lots of videos from when my kids were babies.  It’s always fun to watch those happy times.

Friday evening Travis was in a wreck and, thankfully, no one was hurt and he was not at fault.  The damage to his car looks like it was pretty significant or will be to repair.  Keith went on a fishing trip this weekend with a bunch of guys that included my brother and nephew.  After their catch they had a big fish fry that I understand was quite good.

37|2013 Lazy Circles in the Sky (September 30 – October 6, 2013)

Within a few minutes after Keith left the house he returned to let me know of a photo opp in our neighborhood.  I’m not particularly fond of birds and know very little about them so I had to do a bit of researching to determine what this one might be.  Based on that information, I think this is a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk who was probably making lazy circles in the sky before he stood in this pile of feathers.
